It all started after they exchanged their BBM pins, and the rest of the story portrays their cute love story which might seem child-like at some point but is definitely a simple and innocent love story. 10 women empowering advertisements

5 minute

Over the decade, we’ve seen a lot of advertisements that have been very stereotypical against women, why is this so important? Advertisements play a huge role in educating the audience today, and portraying ads in a gender stereotypical way not only has an effect on the existing generation but also the upcoming generation because they grow up with such stereotypical ideas in the mind. While we all have seen the typical advertisements of women in the kitchen, washing clothes and cleaning…here are a few advertisements to light up your mood and that have also brought a change in the way women have been perceived all through the years:

  • Ariel – #share the load:

Ariel has been making headlines for its ad campaigns on the household inequality faced by women from the last few years. They started coming up with creative advertisements to end this stereotype of women being the only one subjected to household chores. #ShareTheLoad has been their tagline since then and they have come up with role reversal in their advertisements from stereotypical image of a woman washing clothes to men and dads sharing the load too. They have been making progress ever since they started, there was also a catchy jingle created at the start of the campaign, here is a glimpse of what they’ve been up to over the years.

  • Nirma-

Nirma’s advertisement of women outpowering men and coming out strong was released in the year 2011. The main motive behind the advertisement was to feature women equally strong amongst the patriarchal and stereotypical ideology of woman being very sensitive and weak. The woman here pulls out an ambulance from a puddle of mud while the men stand there watching and staying out of the dirt. This advertisement was trending way back then and created a lot of hype, it was also a comeback for Nirma after sliding down in business by the other competitors.

  • Myntra’s Anouk- Bold is beautiful:

Anouk is Myntra’s in-house ethnic brand and ever since it started, they have been releasing very creative and empowering advertisements of women. We all remember Radhika Apte starring in an advertisement with a pregnancy bump. The advertisement shows how pregnant women are often neglected at work or aren’t given any importance because she’s obviously going on a maternity leave or never coming back anyways. In the advertisement they also portray that woman are themselves the ones supporting and encouraging such stereotypes. The ad is very beautiful and a must watch for everyone who thinks that women can’t work while they’re pregnant.

  • Havells- #Respect for women:

Havells brought a change in its style of advertising and started the #RespectForWomen campaign. We usually tend to give all our work to our mother’s, wives or daughters but when are we going to learn to step up and do something for ourselves. Havells started the Respect for Women campaign to create a change that women are not kitchen appliances. Ever since then, they have been coming up with quirky and creative advertisements usually explaining men the difference between a woman and a kitchen appliance. Here is one such advertisement that you will enjoy.

  • Brooke bond Red Label- #Unstereotype:

We are often told that why you behaving like a girl? Or why are you doing this? It’s a girl’s job. Brooke bond’s advertisement of #Unstereotype very effortlessly carries itself trying to change the ideology that boys can also do things that girls can do. The advertisement shows a small boy preparing tea, but not just for himself but a friend of his who is a girl. The ad is beautiful in its own way and has a very emotional appeal to it. To anyone who’s always been asked to stop doing things because it’s a woman’s job this advertisement will definitely unstereotype your thinking.

  • Titan Raga’s – #HerLifeHerChoices

When it comes to women, we expect them to follow or act according to what we believe they should be doing, whether it is getting married, leaving your career to get into marriage or sacrificing your dreams for your children. We have all seen and read about these things, but what if we told you these aren’t the way women are. Titan Raga brings in the #HerLifeHerChoices ad’s that explain that you don’t have to quit your dreams and ambitions just to get married and rear children, that you don’t have to marry because of peer or societal pressure. Everything happens at the right time.

  • Tanishq-

Whenever we think of Tanishq, all we can imagine is a bride sitting and getting ready with fine jewellery being embraced by her. This is exactly how we all have been seeing jewellery advertisements in the past few years, but not anymore because Tanishq stepped up and changed their ideology of jewellery being portrayed against women. They have been releasing advertisements of how empowering women can be in their roles and how effortlessly they carry themselves out every day. Mia’s #Best at work ad, the wedding film ad and the Niloufer ad are one among the best of Tanishq.

  • Biba- #ChangeisBeautiful

Bringing in a Change is indeed beautiful and especially amongst our daughters, wives and mothers. Biba believes in the exact same and their Change is Beautiful ad’s have not only brought in a change in men but have also touched women. They have touched topics like marriage, dowry, body conscious and studies. The main objective behind Biba is to make sure that not only men or society change, but for women to also accept themselves for who they are and embrace themselves completely. They have a series of 5 ads under the Change is Beautiful campaign, and here is one advertisement among them that you will love.

  • Whisper- #MyTouchtThePickleMoment

We all know the taboos that surround periods and especially sanitary napkins. Whisper took a stand for all the taboos surrounding the topic of menstruation and came up with the #MyTouchThePickleMoment. The advertisement portrays how carrying a sanitary napkin in the open is still considered a taboo and not acceptable by many people even today. We all have to teach our daughters, our society and our kids that it is okay to menstruate, it is okay to openly talk about it and it is okay to be normal.

  • Vicks- #TouchOfCare

The Vicks #TouchOfCare campaign was a very emotional story of Gauri Sawant. This ad beautifully captures the emotions of a child and mother but it a hint of surprise till the end. Over all, this advertisement has been one of the most impactful ads because it not only breaks gender stereotype but also creates a new change in the society and gives and identity to Gauri Sawant as a doting mother. Wondering what we’re talking about? Then go and have a loot at this ad, the end will leave you as surprised as we were and will definitely bring tears in your eyes and a smile on your face.

These are a few advertisements that only change the way we think about women, but also show them in a very empowering manner and encourage them to accept themselves for who they are and what they’re doing. Share with us which ad you loved the most right below in the comments section.

Why Monica and Chandler Gave Us Serious Couple Goals!

5 minute

Chandler and Monica were best friends, great partners and finally adorable parents, we can all imagine… Chandler being a strict father and Monica being a completely crazy mother right? We love all the couples in the show, Mike-phoebe were a great couple and so were our “WE WERE ON A BREAK” couple, but Mondler gave us major couple goals.

Everyone who has ever watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S know who Chandler and Monica are, the best friends turned lovers turned husband-wife. Amidst the chaos of Ross and Rachel’s confused relationship, Chandler and Monica fell in love and gave us some serious goals. Monica and Chandler’s storyline wasn’t even there in the writer’s mind but who knew that it would turn out to be so good. We all have seen the two most adorable relationships of the series which is RosChel and Mondler, but why are Chandler and Monica the Ultimate couple? Here’s why:

  • They were best friends –

Chandler and Monica were really good friends before they started dating each other. They knew each other really well, and were well aware of each other’s likes and dislikes, habits and fears. So, they hit it off easily and it also spared them the process of knowing each other. Most of us believe that it is a bad idea to date our best friends, but after seeing a couple like Chandler and Monica we all definitely need a Mondler to ourselves.

  • Accepting each other’s flaw –

One of the most important part of a relationship is accepting each other’s flaws. Monica Geller and her obsession with everything being perfect, her perfect image of marriage and of course her love for children; and Chandler Bing being the lazy, funny and commitment phobic guy. They both accepted each other’s flaws and eventually learned to live with them, A commitment phobic man and a perfectionist managed their relationship in a such a beautiful manner, and they never had to take “A BREAK”

  • Don’t expect your partner to change –

Mondler never forced each other to change themselves, in fact they were happy with who they were. After Chandler moves in with Monica, Monica doesn’t expect Chandler to become a cleanliness freak and neither does Chandler expect Monica to change her behaviour after he moves in. They never expected changes from each other, but with the relationship gradually becoming deeper maybe they put efforts in trying to make each other happy by doing things that the other likes, The part where Chandler cleans the house to make Monica happy which didn’t turn out to be a good idea, Monica being a perfectionist has issues with the way things in her house changed but she eventually puts everything back to where it belonged and yet appreciated Chandler’s effort to make her happy. There weren’t huge changes, but their efforts mattered a lot.

  • Compromise in the relationship –

Compromising for another is the biggest quality that one holds in a relationship, Monica who is the ultimate freak of being perfect had her whole wedding planned at the age of 5 and had even decided her wedding dress but she gave up her perfect wedding and dress so that Chandler could get his favourite band play at the wedding. Love is not always about you, and maybe sometimes giving up something of yours to make your partner happy is one of the best feelings. Monica understood this and that is why someone like her knew that Compromising in the key to a happy relationship.

  • Understanding each other –

Since they were best friends, they knew each other really well. They had a great understanding on how to handle things and how not to. From the moving in, to the wedding, to the conceiving of babies and finally to their perfect house. Initially their relationship was a secret, they did not want to spoil their friendship because they were hooking up with each other continuously after Ross’s wedding. They took time in understanding their relationship first and did not want to jump into it instantly and spoil whatever they have.

  • Supporting each other’s decisions –

Whether it was Chandler moving to Tulsa, or changing his job and pursuing his passion; or whether it was Monica becoming a head chef at Big Apple. They had each other’s back no matter what and never cribbed or made a big thing about it. They knew what was best for each other and that is why they were always in favour of each other. A quite a few jokes here and there, but they gave us major goals when it came to supporting each other.

  • Leaving the past behind –

They knew each other’s past really well and especially their exes, Monica’s obsessive love for Richard and Chandler’s loving Janice- OH MY GOD! Not only did they leave their exes behind, but they were never insecure about each other for what they had done in the past and always faced it together. Although, Chandler did get a little insecure about Richard after they started dating, but we all know who Monica loves and marries in the end.

  • Sticking together through thick and thin –

Throughout the entire series, the only couple who stuck through thick and thin no matter what came by was Monica and Chandler. We all know that they supported each other throughout, made long distance relationship work and finally when they were ready to have a baby, they got to know that they couldn’t have babies. It was heart-breaking for all of us, knowing Monica’s obsession of becoming a mother but they loved each other even more and never let any of that get into their relationship. They decided to adopt babies and make their family a happy family.

  • The Proposal –

Chandler has been commitment phobic since the very beginning and for him to actually propose the woman he loves is hands down a big thing, but it was not that easy and also with a hint of surprise. Chandler wasn’t the only one who went down on his knees, Monica surprised him by decorating the entire house because she had a hint that he was going to propose to her. It wasn’t a cliché man proposing to a woman, but both of them going down their knees to tell each other that they were ready to spend the rest of their lives together. Honestly, we all cried a bit during their proposal and it was one hell of a magical proposal.

  • Not every Love story is a Fairy tale –

Monica’s perfect love story did not start in a perfect way, from hooking up in the wedding, to the awkward moving in, to being crazy and totally a mess, to finally proposing each other, to adopting babies and finally moving in to their perfect house. Their love story had a lot of hurdles that they had to go through and by this we know that not all love stories are fairy tales. Sometimes, its okay to be just the way you are and just be happy.

Things to do with your Gal Pals

5 minute

Our BFF’s is the best thing that has ever happened to us, we love hanging out and being around with them. They understand the unsaid things running in our mind that not even our boyfriend would comprehend, they complete our incomplete sentences and songs for us, they know what is right and what is wrong for us especially if it’s drunk-dialling your ex. They always have our backs. Creating memories and tons of memories because there’s nothing like a lot of memories with them, here are a few things that you should do at least once with your Gal Pal-

  • Buy twinning clothes-

Having matching clothes like t-shirts or onesies is so awesome. Maybe you can colour co-ordinate on the days you meet or for any special occasion, anyways having matching clothes should definitely be on your list of things to do together.

  • Go abroad on a vacation together

Travelling with your best friend can get really crazy, with having lots of fun to going on a shopping spree and most importantly exploring new places together with them. Going to your favourite destination or her favourite destination and enjoying yourself out there in the company of each other, Oh what more could you ask for.

  • Get matching tattoos together

Another thing that you should have in your list of twinning is getting tattoos done together, you both can either share the same tattoo or get a tattoo that has a meaning to your friendship. Either ways, you both will be tattooing something on yourself for the rest of your life that means something to you and this will only create a strong bond.

  • Netflix and Chill the entire weekend

Who said Netflix and chill is all about sex and boyfriends? the most amazing part of Netflix and chill is when you and your best friend hang out with each other and binge watch your favourite series or an entire series for that matter with lots and lots of food to eat. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me!

  • best friend capsules

This might seem really crazy, but trust me creating your own best friend capsules is an adventure of its own. Imagine few years down the lane when you’re growing older and you find your best friend capsule. You reminisce the good old days back and cherish the memories that you’ve had with them. A best friend capsule should definitely be on your list because it is going to be one hell of a memory to look back to.

  • Have a tradition of your own

Making traditions for yourself is a really good idea, it can be as small as going out on every Friday night or watching a series together, it can be as big as a mapping your fingers through the world with your eyes closed and the place you stop becomes your next travel destination. Having a tradition of your own will make the friendship stronger and also both of you will feel attached to each other even though you might not be staying with each other.

  • Go on a road-trip –

An empty road, loud music with your favourite playlist and your best friend by your side…Now that is hell lot of fun. You should definitely go on a road trip with your best friend at least once because the feeling of travelling on road is really different. The wind flying through your hair, the road karaoke sessions, mapping and re-mapping the routes but still ending up lost and finding new routes and finding new places. It is one of the best kinds of adventure as well as trip one could as for.

  • A relaxing spa day –

Who wouldn’t love a spa date with your best friend? After your hectic daily schedules, making time for yourselves and going to the spa together sounds soothing and relaxing. Getting a hair spa, manicure and pedicure, a fruitful facial and finally ending it with a great massage. Isn’t it already tempting? So, the next time you’re stressed and want to take a break, you know what to do ladies.

  • Go to a concert –

Going to a concert and shouting your lungs out while your favourite band is playing sounds magical. We all have a favourite band or artist, and attending their concert has been our dream, but what if you and best friend loved the same band? That would be endless singing sessions and crushing over the same artists. If you want to do something more than that, you can always surprise her with concert tickets.

  • Go on a double date –

This might seem very weird, but it can be turn out to be really amazing. Going on a double date or setting up each other on blind dates can sound ridiculous. You both can go out with your dates, and if at all you don’t like them then you have the company of each other that will keep you entertained for the rest of the evening. If you all really hit it off then you’ll most likely be going on couple dates together.

  • Playlist of your own songs –

We usually do not show our crazy and wild side to anyone except our best friend, and only they know how weird we are. You and your best friend can have a playlist of your own, like Arijit Singh songs when you’re depressed to hardcore Punjabi songs when you’re happy, From Ed Sheeran songs of love to Michael Jackson’s dance hits. Your own playlist of songs according to your mood, this is something that every BFF should do for each other.

  • Own a Polaroid and create memories –

Polaroid cameras are something we all love because of its instant photos. We all should own a polaroid camera and create memories with our best friend. You will be creating tons of memories that you will hold dear for the rest of your life. Maybe you can have a separate corner in your room and hang up all of pictures that you’ve shared with fairy lights sounds magical. A definition of a best friend’s room!

  • Go on best friend dates-

Going on dates with your boyfriend is okay, but best friend dates? Hell yeah! You and your best friend should totally hang out and spend time together. You can have endless gossip sessions, stalking random people on Instagram, eating like you just don’t care and lastly because you love each other so much. Sometimes, best friend dates can be very therapeutic and you can completely be yourself when you’re around them.

  • Create your own set of bucket list-

All best friends should have their own set of bucket lists, something that they want to do together. They will create a lot of memories and explore a lot of new things on the way to fulfil their bucket list. We definitely recommend all you BFF’S out there to have you very own personalized bucket list because they are personal to you and things which mean a lot to you.

Do tell us what you think about these must do things with your girl bestie, and if you have any experiences or more ideas then do write down to us in the comment section below.

GLADYATOR: Meet the twins making a mark in the sustainable fashion field.

3 minute
Gladyators_ Aqsa and Tuba Sajjad (1).png

In a time where Climate change is being debated upon, there is a company which takes the most used thing, and makes it safe for the environment, your clothes. Coral Doe was started in 2018 by Aqsa and Tuba Sajjad to make comfortable clothing that is sustainable and ethical. They intend to be 100% sustainable by the end of 2023 and are working well towards it.

The company and the team intends to go a step beyond and create awareness among its users about the need of the hour, sustainable fashion.

We spoke to Aqsa, Coral Doe’s co-founder, and here is her take on being an Entrepreneur and her aspirations.

WhatsApp Image 2020-02-03 at 4.56.40 PM.jpeg

  • Please tell us what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place?

For me, it's about getting to do something I love every single day. It may sound cliche but as a person who suffered from depression, anxiety, and mental health issues, it was very important to my well being to have a reason to wake up and work hard every single day. Coral Doe has brought meaning to my life and has given me something to work for.

Plus, the thought of working for someone else's dream has always been suffocating. It only made sense to become an entrepreneur.

  • What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?

Gary Vee. He's a huge motivation and encourages you to focus on all aspects of your life: professional, personal, and all others.

  • What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

Growing my business to 2000+ customers in under a year has been the most rewarding experience. Sometimes, I truly can't believe we did this.

  • What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?

I read somewhere: These 5AMs will make you a legend one day.

This has stuck with me since the day I read it. But it's important to take it with a grain of salt. Sometimes, hard work and waking up at 5AM isn't the way to go about it. Sometimes, you have to work smart rather than hard. Also, another good advice is to keep at it and to try to sustain your business in every way if it's something you love. But also to know when to quit. Not all businesses are sustainable and the world isn't ready for every idea yet.

  • What has been the most effective marketing initiatives or programs you have used to promote your business?

Word of mouth is always the best way to market your brand. Instagram content and ads have also been great for us.

  • What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well.

Every sale and every customer matters, as a small business owner. It's always lovely to see customers going out of their way to support, review, and comment.

  • Are there any resources or tools you’d like to share with other small business owners that have helped you run your business? If yes, please describe.

Gary Vee's videos are a brilliant resource.

Any tool that'll keep your finances organized is important. Invest in a good accounting software. Finances are everything.

  • Have you faced any failures? How did you overcome that failure and what did you learn from it?

Everyone faces failure. You either learn from it or you go backwards.

  • What do you do for fun/relaxation?

I go to the gym and I read a lot of books. When you have your own business, it's hard to draw boundaries with work. Work never stops. It's always important to force yourself to take a break from work.

  • What is the Number One Business Goal you plan to accomplish over the next year?

Expanding into new markets.

Learning more and more business literature.

Diving deeper into sustainable manufacturing and trying to move other brands towards it too.

  • If you were to give an advice to a 16 year old you, what would you say?

Find a supportive circle of friends. Invest in people and friendships. It'll go a long way in life.

  • How can I be a good leader?

Put your team first. And lead with compassion.

  • The last question, what keeps you up at night?

The thought that maybe I should be doing more and working harder (Not a healthy thought at all. I always have to remind myself to give myself credit)

Super Bowl 2020: Extremity In The Name Of Culture?

2 minute
Superbowl 2020.jpg

After a great game of an outstanding comeback by Kansas City Chiefs (Vs San Francisco 49ers) in Super Bowl LIV, the crowd seemed to be inclined towards debating a rather isolated issue than the game itself: Was the halftime performance by Hollywood’s beloved superstars Shakira and Jennifer Lopez obscene?

The two set the stage on fire and how! (Although, this might seem to have contradicted the opinion of the majority)

What the audience found and I quote “terribly disturbing”:

The broadcast featured the two stars in costumes showcasing their buttocks, pole dancing and grabbing their crotch multiple times on stage- all interpreted as ruthless objectification of women by two of the most influential women in the world.

A famous reporter of the Golf Channel even went ahead and tweeted: “Stop dancing on a stripper pole on the biggest stage and then complain about how often we get sexualised.. The hypocrisy of wanting to not be seen as sex symbols but then wearing outfits and choosing overtly sexual choreography has me very confused”

An audience full of young parents on the other hand had their own issues with regard to how something like THE Super Bowl, an event supposedly aired for all age groups to enjoy could have a performance such as this as if it were the 'new normal’.

The halftime show featuring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez seemed to garner more buzz than the game itself. (What!?) At some point, little children were showcased in cages- all seen as a political statement about President Trump’s immigration policy - but the whole pole dancing and stimulated sex gestures were viewed as most offensive.

Prolife advocate Abby Johnson tweeted, “On the day of the highest rate of sex trafficking, the NFL says, ‘Hey, let’s have two women dance half naked and get a bunch of zoomed in crotch shots of them. That’s female empowerment!’ Do they have no clue that they just contributed to the commodification of women?” Even though a lot of folks said they loved the energy and called the two Latina’s performances “historic”, the popular opinion seems to have been this: misrepresentation of an entire culture on one of the biggest stages airing worldwide.

The performance might have not appeared to be “family friendly” to a few but did it deserve a statement as harsh as “This exhibition was Pepsi showing young girls that sexual exploitation of women is OK”?

Move over Gryffindor, Ravenclaw is the best Hogwarts house. Let me tell you why.

2 minute

Or yet, in wise old Ravenclaw,If you're a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind.

With the everlasting conflict between which is the most superior house, I have always been clear. I honestly cannot recall ever wanting to be anything else, having identified as a Ravenclaw for as long as I can remember. You can imagine my relief when Pottermore sorted me and had my lifelong understanding confirmed: I am wholeheartedly, without a doubt, a Ravenclaw.

Contrary to popular belief, the mascot of Ravenclaw is an eagle, not a raven. The eagle is a symbol of strength and immortality, and it is closely linked to the gods Zeus and Odin.

Luna Lovegood, arguably the most lovable character to ever exist, is – of course – a Ravenclaw. Cho Chang, another Ravenclaw, showed that being analytical doesn’t mean you can’t show emotion too. Garrick Ollivander, considered to be the world’s best wandmaker, was a Ravenclaw as well. He used both his creativity and his knowledge to be successful in wandlore. Professor Flitwick, Head of Ravenclaw House, was a champion duelist. There is a long line of talented Ravenclaws in all areas of the wizarding world.

We aren't untainted and always pure I must add. Professor Quirrell and Professor Lockhart were both Ravenclaws. Quirrell was tempted by the enticement of Dark magic. Lockhart let his pride get the best of him.

Ravenclaws crave all knowledge, even the knowledge of evil.

I feel a little weird showing House pride as a Ravenclaw sometimes. I’m not trying to proclaim that I’m smarter than you or rub my intelligence in others’ faces, but if Gryffindors can be proud of their courage, why can’t I be proud of my wisdom? “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure” after all. And that’s something that I admire about Ravenclaw – an entire House full of people who value education, learning, and knowledge. They are constantly striving to be better and to learn more. What more can you hope for in the people that you surround yourself with?

Ravenclaws are creative and independent. They value logic and can find innovative solutions to problems. They observe and take in all that they see. Fun fact, the coolest part about Ravenclaw is the entrance to their common room: You have to answer a riddle to get in. What’s most amazing is that this has been foolproof against all non-Ravenclaws. I’m not sure how nobody wanting to break into Ravenclaw Tower has been successful, but it’s a happy thought that that’s all the protection they need.

And, everyone looks good in Blue.

Dating in the virtual world: What changes

5 minute
Online Dating

Dating - the ever perplexing, “revealing labour of love” - too, has changed so much over the past few years. But these last couple of months have led singles to bank upon more different and novel routes to search for potential partners

Even before COVID-19 existed in our lives, dating apps made it easier to find a match by eliminating ones that didn't seem fit with the option of what the Gen Z so very fondly calls “swipe left”. How we interact with people has changed significantly over the last decade and it seems as though the evolution of dating has needed a boost now more than ever. With more time on our hands to explore new relationships and a lack of adequate means for doing so, the pandemic sure has left singles (looking to mingle), brand new lovers and long-time sweethearts in a bit of a pickle. What classifies as a “date” in corona times has taken a massive turn. The pandemic may end, but is the shift here to stay?

How has COVID changed the dating game?

online dating

Like everything else, dating - the ever perplexing, “revealing labour of love” - too, has changed so much over the past few years. But these last couple of months have led singles to bank upon more different and novel routes to search for potential partners:

video chat

Video Chats To The Rescue

One massive change in the world of virtual dating has been video calls replacing cafeteria dates. In a way, it’s great to get to know someone without the “what to order” and “who gets the cheque” hassle. You don't have to spend hours deciding what to wear, or where to meet, and everyone’s worst nightmare - dealing with city traffic to actually get to your date on time. A study conducted showed that before Covid-19, only 6 percent of single people used video chat to court. Now, 69 percent are open to video chatting with a potential partner, and one-third of them already had someone with whom they’d like to talk - via video!

There are some not-so-obvious advantages to start seeing someone (as a potential partner) on video chatting platforms like zoom or facetime. During this period where the world seems to have paused, it is likely that you don’t look your best-self - maybe you couldn’t get a haircut as you would in an ideal scenario - for whatever reason, it’s simpler to evaluate someone's background and interests while they’re in their natural habitat. Personalities aren’t based on what one’s food preferences are and this leaves more room for some real talk.

Sex Is (Obviously) Out

Two (rather insignificant) first-date elements are out of the picture with this pandemic. In a world where people are likely to hook up even before their first “real date”, sex is now completely out of the frame. So at least with the discomfort of “should I make a move?” gone, partners can now focus on other interesting ways to keep each other company. Talking about sex itself seems to reveal a whole lot about people’s perspectives on the subject. This gives people more room to get comfortable in a later encounter and less space for the walk of shame scenario.

Along with sex, money talk seems to be off the table too. On the first date at a restaurant, singles always find themselves negotiating when the cheque arrives. But with in-person dates canceled, there's no more of that awkwardness deciding what place to pick either. Is a cafe too basic? Are the drinks at this bar too expensive? With corona in the picture, money negotiations are now history.

More Time to Talk

With the world being in lockdown, people seem to have more time on their hands, now more than ever. Dressing up in the morning, commuting to work or late meetings are all events of the past. What does this leave you with? Time. Time to engage. Time to introspect. Most importantly, time to talk. You’ll find that the change worldwide has also left small talk at bay. Singles seem to be communicating far more meaningful and relevant thoughts, even on social media - about fear, dreams and hope. Psychologists say that self-disclosure or the process of revealing one’s innermost feelings, experiences and attitudes  - is what prompts intimacy and commitment. They are the foundation blocks of a sturdy relationship.

Time For Slow Love

One of the nicer pay-offs of this current situation is the extension of the “getting to know one another” phase. In previous decades, marriages were the beginning of a relationship. Today, a marriage is a ceremony celebrating an already existing romance. Many prefer to date their partners before getting married. And this pandemic has caused the same trend to be fueled. The thing is, from an evolutionary perspective, our brains are soft-wired to get attached to a partner slowly. Research of the human brain has shown that men and women who have been in love for 18 months or lesser show activity in regions associated with “intense romantic passion” whereas couples who have been in love for more than 2 years showed activity in an additional brain region that is associated with bonding and attachment - which according to most, trumps intense passion in a long-term relationship.

The bottom line is, romantic love and passion can be triggered fast, but feelings of a deeper attachment take longer to develop. And thanks to the lockdown, an extended courtship period has given rise to a much needed “slow love” trend.

Path To An Enduring Marriage

A study of 3000 couples, found that those who dated for less than a year before marriage were 20% more likely to end in divorce than those who dated for at least one or two years before wedlock. And couples who dated for over 3 years before marrying were the least likely to break up.

The coronavirus has seemingly delayed matrimony and this gives couples who are engaged a longer period to date.

Before the coronavirus, many of us abused new technologies of online dating. Time and again, singles have dizzily tapped, clicked, binged and swiped - all in an attempt to seek the right partner. But in reality, the human brain isn’t built to handle that many choices.

For decades now, researchers have deeply studied the way we choose our partners. It has been found that after being offered six options, we burn out - something known as cognitive overload or paradox of choice. Other research on the subject notes that our short-term memory system cannot embrace more than 5 to 9 stimuli at once. But all of them agree that when we’re faced with too many alternatives, we end up choosing none.

So after conversing with nine people who you assume might be appropriate - it is advised to stop your scouting and get to know at least one of them better. The more you get to know someone, the more likely it is for you to like them.

On a very unrelated note: Think of reasons to say “yes.” We’ve evolved to have a brain region linked with what neuroscientists call “the negativity bias.” We are programmed to remember the negatives - a response that was adaptive across our human past, as it is today. So try and overlook that he’s a meat-lover and you’re a vegan or he likes cats and you’re a dog person. Focus on what you do like about him/her. Defy the negativity bias and focus on the positives.

It is certain that a lot of people will get back to meeting in-person when the pandemic subsides. We’re homo sapiens. We’re built to intensify relationships face to face. But today, more and more singles prefer video chatting before they actually meet in person. A new stage altogether in the “courtship process” is flourishing -  saving individuals time and money as well as enabling several to kiss fewer frogs. As odd as it may seem, this pandemic may actually lead to happier and more enduring partnerships in a post-corona age.

Fun facts about the Evolution of Dating

Dating as we know it, hasn’t always been this way. But of course, you already knew that. A normal dating ritual would probably be considered really scandalous even a couple of decades ago. Here are some fun facts about dating that you’ve probably never heard of before:

  1. In the 1900s, Dating could be considered a felony

At the turn of the 19th century, dating was still a very novel concept and law enforcement wasn't sure what to make of it but it was still looked down upon as a sleazy act, nonetheless. Two strangers meeting in public, the man buying the woman drinks, food and even gifts - was all veritable prostitution in the eyes of the authorities, and women would be arrested for it.

  1. It wasn’t always called Dating

Fun fact: The word “date” in the content of a relationship was first used back in 1896 in a newspaper where a young man expresses grief about his girlfriend seeing other people besides him. He explains how they were “filling all his dates” - as in the dates on her calendar, which then went on to popularise as the “date” we all know of today.

  1. Wearing makeup might have emerged as a result of Dating(?)

Before the 1900s, the only women who “painted their faces” were actors and prostitutes. A natural look was considered to be a demonstration of “clean and decent living”. Later, the cosmetic industry rebranded themselves and portrayed make-up to be more mainstream - something that set an admirable goal and expressed femininity.

4. Dating went from meaning “Saving” to “Spending” real quick

Before dating was a thing, "courtship" was conducted with the one goal of marriage. It was almost always a family affair, as “callers” meant heirs and property. The newly established dating industry, however, had other (rather different) goals in mind. Marriages would actually cause damage to earnings. Why? Because marriages meant dating people first and dating meant spending money to meet a prospective partner. Those Starbucks coffees don't come cheap now, do they?

5.18th-Century parents allowed serious couples to fool around

Societal norms before the 20th century weren't as rigid as you might assume. In most countries like the USA, a tradition gave “courting” (in today’s context, dating) couples the permission to engage in sexual behaviour as long as they didn’t have sex. Young couples were allowed to sleep in the same bed, provided they were each tarried into cloth sacks. Benjamin Franklin describes how the parents of his first marriage prospect had encouraged him to fool around with their daughter. They would invite him over and leave them both alone in the parlour. Versions of this winking permissiveness toward serious couples seemed to continue through the Era. And you thought your parents were cool to allow you for that one sleepover that one time. (well, oops)

The Future of Dating

If you’re worried that human beings are ensnared by a virtual world today, and pay little attention to intimacy, you better hold tight because you sure as hell aren’t ready for what lies ahead.

What does the future look like?

dating apps

Computer-generated (But better)

You can find all sorts of online dating platforms on the internet today. All you’ve got to do is fill a detailed application and voila! The internet starts scouting for a potential partner for you. While the process may not seem difficult, it is still quite impersonal. In the future, many special algorithms will exist to analyze your preferences (in-depth), scan your pictures on social media, and even consider all the people you interact with to create a curated list of perfect potential partners for you. This would change the dating game entirely by making the whole process less tiring and more personal, taking the concept of matchmaking to a whole other level. Some experts predict that 50% of relationships in the future will begin with online dating. The whole “bumping into the one by an act of faith” is now on its way to being a silly idea of the past.

The Reign of Augmented and Virtual Reality

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re caught completely off guard in a conversation and simply don’t know how to respond? You can’t quite ascertain what your partner is hinting at but you wish you could? We all have. It is these moments that you won't have to worry about in the future. Companies like Google and Apple are currently working on devices like glasses and contact lenses that will bring augmented reality to change the way we interact with people and build relationships. There will exist plenty of hints to guide you to have a smoother conversation with your partner.

Full sensory virtual reality too, is something that researchers have been exploring today. You don't have to leave your bed to go on a date - this could literally fix the current situation of “dating in quarantine”. You would be able to digitally simulate feelings or emotions and transmit them using special VR devices. This would save single folks a whole lot of time and energy by helping them find like-minded people in the most efficient ways. It might sound absurd now, but then again, people from the 19th century would have considered our modern-day dating insane too.

DNA and Microbial Matchmaking

The developments in medicine is another contributor to change the looks of family and relationship planning. Not only would people be able to select different donors from a sperm bank, but they are also likely to have full access to the medical history records of a person. Basically, if you’re going on a date with someone, you would not only be stalking him on social media for a background check, you’d also be able to assess if his family has a history of diabetes. (or any other disease, really)

What's more? Medical experts will step in as your dating advisors and do most of the match-making instead of relationship gurus. With the help of thorough DNA analysis, at least one thing is certain - the possibility of a child with perfectly combined genes. Now, who wouldn’t want that, right?

Robots as Life Partners

There are a lot of singles out there who are disappointed with their love life and refuse to go through the breakup drama over and over again. As much as most of us would like a perfect relationship straight out of our favourite rom coms, it is in our nature to sometimes let our feelings get the best of us. Many would prefer to live in an imaginary world with a lifelike robot or silicone doll. (Fact: this is already a common practice in Japan). While all of this may seem like an episode from The Black Mirror, experts predict that people will actually start to live (and fall in love with!) robots in less than a few decades. The first robot with feelings was launched not so long ago, so it’s only a matter of time before a majority of single people start to prefer a “robot romance” instead of the real deal.

Does this change scare or excite you?

1 minute
I can see your future. (1).png

Aries(March 21- April 20):

The card represents arguments, resistance, challenges and disputes.

You can experience a lack of harmony, loss of power, pettiness, threats, confusion, or turmoil this week. But the result doesn't have to be all negative. If you're willing to hold your position when working on the problems, you're going to come out on top.

Taurus(April 21- May 21)

It may mean that you have acquired enormous wealth and attained all your goals, but you also want to play with money safely this week. You are highly possessive about your accrued financial wealth, fearing that anyone could steal them all. Even if you are financially well-off, giving too much attention to materialistic things will make you a narrow-minded miser.

Gemini(May 22- June 21):

The card suggests that you may find fun, excitement, and satisfaction in everything and attempt to close your eyes to the struggles and challenges that lie ahead. It could be some sort of anxiety that lets you ignore reality and drive you into a world of fantasy. Try to draw a line between the real and the imaginary, as you may miss a golden opportunity while lying ideal and dreaming all day.

Cancer(June 22- July 22):

This week is all about truth, goodwill, spirituality, achievement, creative thinking, regeneration, and harmony. Getting this card is a positive omen. It would mean that you have a strong path for your future and that you have high expectations and ambitions. You live a happy life full of creative ideas. This card also indicates that a new innovative concept is emerging. The Star Card indicates the presence of a period of love in your life. With sincerity and authenticity, you are open to healing and transformation.

Leo (July 23- August 23):

The card means that your intellect and moral strength can give you the potential to handle a situation well by remaining cool and courageous. You adapt well to other people's emotional needs and inspire them to work together to accomplish a common goal. When you're feeling mentally overwhelmed, the card tells you to stop an outburst and deal intelligently with the situation.

Virgo (August 24- September 22):

It means that much of your plans are transforming into actions, taking you on the road to success. You now have the opportunity to discover the world and learn about different experiences. Your confidence and self-knowledge give you the courage to extend your mental reach and accomplish your long-term goals.

As indicated by the card, you can learn how to get out of your comfort zone and get bigger and better opportunities. This week you're going to go out and explore a new world and gain new experiences.

Libra (September 23- October 23):
